The head coach of Tiyumba FC, who allegedly assaulted a female referee during a football match in Tamale has been granted bail to the tune of ¢6000 by a Tamale Circuit Court.
The incident happened during a match between women’s Division 1B clubs at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale.
According to eyewitnesses, the Couch, whose name has been disclosed as Iddrisu Suheru Napari, attacked the female referee, Sakina Mohammed Nasara.
The assault left the referee in a pulp and she had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The incident caused a lot of outrage among football fans and sports enthusiasts in Tamale and beyond, with many calling for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrator.
The police arrested the couch and charged him with assault. He was later arraigned before the Tamale Circuit Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The court granted him bail to the tune of ¢6000 with one surety and adjourned the case to 18th July 2023 for a hearing.
The incident has once again brought to the fore the issue of violence against referees in football matches. Referees are often subjected to verbal and physical abuse by players, coaches, and fans, and this has led to many referees quitting the profession.
